I've not had much time to read recently, but I'm well into The Journey to the Centre if the Earth now... The
translation sometimes needs a little puzzling, and, especially near the beginning, the translator often just used semi-colons between clauses rather than
actually constructing more elegant sentences.
And the narrator, Axel, the professor's nephew, is one of the limpest, whiniest protagonists I've come across in a long time! He doesn't want to go, he whines, he argues, he deliberately hides information, he straggles behind... his uncle must surely wish he had never brought him on the expedition!
I don't remember him being so annoying when I've read the book previously; maybe it's a different translation
or maybe it's because
I'm feeling straggly and whiney with this flu-y thing going around...
Not sure what'll come next; I read the first 20+ pages of the latest Juliet Marillier novel a few weeks ago, which I enjoyed... It's set in the early Ottoman Empire, as Paula and her father travel to Istanbul from Bulgaria (or thereabouts) to try to purchase an ancient artifact rumoured to have been found. It may provide the clue to rescuing her sister, who vanished years before...
